NU Apprentice

March saw NU Apprentice 2012 launch, in association with Deloitte. This high energy, student led competition had participating students taking part in a series of challenges over three weeks, gaining real business experience and enriching their CVs, whilst having lots of fun!

After an intense competition Natalie Diver (Business Management) and Rix Babu (International Marketing) took the title and the £500 prize money, impressing judges with their strong pitch in the final.

You can find photos from NU Apprentice 2012 and other Rise Up events on the Rise Up Facebook page. "Like" our page to be the first to find out about NU Apprentice 2013!

"It was fun being a participant for the NU Apprentice...you have put in a wonderful effort behind it. I thank everybody for making it a fabulous event and wish you all the very best." Rix Babu

Kate Griffiths, President SIFE Newcastle

SIFE Newcastle's achievements at this year's SIFE National Competition are a real testament to all the hard work that every member has committed throughout the year. We are delighted to have been ranked as a top 16 team out of 47 nationally, winning two outstanding achievement awards and a diversity award.

The team began as eight members in 2009, progressing to an average of fifty members with six projects to our name, three years later. I have every confidence in next year's committee, the society will strengthen and grow so that by 2013, they will be competing in the final.

Good luck to everyone, keep up the hard work, and most importantly remember why you're doing this and the lives you are impacting and changing for the better. SIFE Newcastle is here to stay at Newcastle University!

Rise Up Newsround Headlines

The Rise Up Pitch

The Rise Up Pitch provides access to a team of some of the region's most influential and experienced business professionals and entrepreneurs. Our experts provide start up businesses with advice and support tailored to individual needs, including starting a high growth business and innovation guidance.

Simon Vlcek, Computing Science said: "The format of the panel sessions is great! Of course a big part of it is the panel members themselves, but the open and unintimidating atmosphere allows for constructive discussion of topics without worrying about saying anything stupid."

This year's series of adviser and pitch panels draws to a close with a celebratory event in May. The Pitch will become available to aspiring entrepreneurs in the new academic year.

In the meantime, if you would like to know more, contact Claire Adamson who will be happy to help.

Rise Up Entrepreneurship Programme (RUEP) 2012

The Rise Up Entrepreneurship Programme (RUEP) is a series of intensive, interactive workshops designed to give start up businesses a realistic understanding of what it takes to develop strategies for launching a profitable, sustainable business. This year's programme saw some of the most engaging and insightful speakers collaborating with Fast Forward Now, to provide our most successful course to date. Watch this space for news on the launch date for our next RUEP. If you weren't able to attend this time, you can call into the Elevator to discuss your idea with one of our dedicated team. If you would like more info on RUEP please contact Jenny Biddulph.

"Thanks enormously for the opportunity to attend such a practical, beneficial, and informative programme. It's helped me to anticipate and plan in detail for aspects of business enterprise that, at this early stage, I surely wouldn't have taken the trouble to explore seriously otherwise- such as visualising where I'd like my business to be further down the road." Xing Chen, Neuroscience PhD student.

Surprising facts about how famous brands came about

Designing and developing your brand is one of the most important activities any business will have, especially in the early days. But does it have to be rocket science? Here are a few interesting, and surprising facts about how some of our more recognisable brands were born...

  • Apple: the inspiration. Steve Jobs was working in a community farm which inspired him to name the company Apple Computers.
  • Adobe: the river. The name came from the river, Adobe Creek, which ran behind the house of one of the company's founders.
  • Google: the back rub. The search engine was originally christened "BackRub". The name change to Google was following a spelling error of "googol".

Find out more about other famous brands here.
