Outdoor Recreation faculty on the road to Tofino, Squamish and Whistler Faculty members of Cap's Outdoor Recreation Management program are taking their show on the road this coming month to host information nights in Tofino (April 24), Squamish (May 2) and Whistler (May 17). Outdoor Recreation students are a unique group. Passionate to a tee about the outdoors and recreational pursuits, they are often extremely socially conscious and aware of their own impact - and of others - on the environment. Looking to combine those passions, Outdoor Rec students strive to find a rewarding career where they can make a difference and positive change, while still pursuing their recreational interests and outdoor lifestyle. Dragons critique Tourism students' business plans Students in the Tourism diploma and degree programs found out just how hard it is to start a business when their Entrepreneurship course assignment received a CBC's Dragons' Den style evaluation. The students spent the semester developing a tourism/recreation-based business startup, with a number of the students planning to launch these businesses following graduation. The two Dragons - Kevin Pearce, president of Landsea Tours and Stewart Marshall, SFU's Venture Connections mentor-in-residence, listened to the student presentations and then critiqued their work based on its financial feasibility. The students were offered valuable feedback and expertise as to how the business plans could evolve to make them more viable. The Dragons' favourite presentations included a plan to launch a 'street-cart' style mobile nail service to hit the Vancouver beaches and a plan to launch a mobile ski/board tuning service throughout North Vancouver. Outdoor Recreation Management student lands dream job before graduating Outdoor Recreation Management student, Jennifer Miller, graduates this spring and has already landed a full-time job managing special events at one of Canada's premier golf resorts, Predator Ridge. After a practicum work term at Predator Ridge, her employer reviewed her work and the courses she had taken at Capilano University - including Tourism Marketing and Special Events Management - and encouraged her to apply for an event management position in their marketing and sales division. When asked what it is about Cap that has prepared her for this next step in her career, and what advice she would offer students considering enrolling in Tourism or Outdoor Recreation programs, Jennifer replied: I followed my passion for travel and the outdoors, which led me to Cap and this great program. The opportunity to get to know my instructors and really network with them and fellow students is unique and helped me gain the confidence and professional skills needed when talking to potential employers. I'd advise students to be open-minded within the program, explore all aspects of the course, and not to be afraid to start at the bottom rung of a company. My first experience at Predator Ridge was as a beverage-cart server, but that foot in the door has led me to where I am today.Outdoor Recreation Management program | Predator Ridge |
Mountain Bike Operations students gain skills through community involvement Students in the Mountain Bike Operations program are gaining practical skills and exposure to potential employers through involvement in community events. The students volunteered at the Vancouver Bike Show in early March, which provided a wide variety of networking opportunities with potential employers and the industry at large. Some students were able to set up job interviews during the show, and a student last year actually landed a job from the show with a Whistler-based company. On the Sunshine Coast, another group of students were in front of the Sunshine Coast Regional District making a very successful presentation on the event management details of a community event - Sprockids Fun Day. The result was the students were able to negotiate $3000 of necessary funding to produce the event. Mountain Bike Operations program |
Sprockids Fun Day - celebrating 20 years of riding The Sprockids Fun Day is an annual event on the Sunshine Coast held in Gibsons, BC. at the Sprockids Bike Park. This year the event is a little bit bigger as they celebrate its 20th anniversary. The Mountain Bike Operations program students are organizing and hosting the event on Apr 28th, which is part of the students' course work for their Special Events-Tourism Generators class. This event is a fun day of bike events with the community, including skills clinics for children and youth, family guided rides, lunch, jump demo and draw prizes. Students in the program are exposed to a wide range of practical skills including event management, negotiation, promotions, fundraising, and community relations as they work with sponsors, media and the Sunshine Coast Regional district.
