The View from Old Main - Summer 2012

EIU4: Eastern's 4-year Graduation Guarantee Program

A Message from the President

When most of our students leave for the summer, our campus becomes deceptively quiet. Don't be fooled — we're still busy working to make Eastern Illinois University an even better place.

  • For example, we were proud to host an extensive state-level emergency exercise that brought hundreds of local, regional and state emergency responders to EIU to test the agencies' — and our — ability to handle crises. The exercise provided invaluable information that will allow all of us to be better prepared should a real disaster occur.
  • We also held public meetings to gather input on the upcoming construction of the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education. CENCERE, which will be located just north of the Renewable Energy Center, will provide faculty and students the opportunity to conduct hands-on investigations of biomass sources.
  • The declining health of Old Main's historic oak tree has called into action not only our grounds crew, but also a professor who is attempting to clone the sprawling campus icon, which likely pre-dates the Declaration of Independence.

I haven't even touched on the amazing things we accomplished before summer break, so please read on for some examples of why it's so great to be a part of Eastern Illinois University, year-round.

Bill Perry
President, EIU
