Raising Awareness about Turning Down the Volume A group of UNC students and two of their professors are building mannequins to help educate kids about the often-overlooked topic of noise-induced hearing loss and the long-term effects that can come from too much time with the volume up too high on personal music players.
Camping by the Numbers Math doesn't usually induce tears, at least not tears of joy. But it just might at the Las Chicas de Matemáticas summer math camp for girls at the University of Northern Colorado. Alumnus Making a Difference, Making Connections   J.J. Paolino (BA-59, MA-60) offered his home for 20 Air Force Academy cadets during the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs. Although only two evacuees stayed with him, many more have experienced the caring generosity of “Grandpa J.”  Crossing the Finish Line A year ago, Karen DeMello was too weak from cancer treatments to take part in the Race Against Cancer, the annual July 4 5k run/walk on to benefit UNC's Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute. This year, she's planning to be among the institute's current and former clients who'll cross the finish line.
