International students arrive at Stockholm University
 
Students from around the world received a warm welcome and an overview of life in Sweden and at Stockholm University during the 2012 autumn term Orientation Day. New international students gathered at Aula Magna to be greeted by staff and existing students, who provided practical information on how to adapt to the new surroundings. Read more »
 
 
 
 
 
Leading an Arctic expedition
 
Ten professors and more than one hundred researchers – the majority coming from Stockholm University – are involved in an Arctic expedition concerning climate change. The expedition to the East Siberian Arctic Ocean will last for 45 days. Read more »
 
 
 
Stockholm University in the top 100
 
The so-called Shanghai ranking of the world's top 100 universities has been published with Stockholm University placed 81. The ranking lists the universities considered the best in the world based on criteria such as the number of scientific articles published, the number of highly cited researchers and the quality of education. Record number of applicants to Stockholm University
 
More than 26,400 people were offered a study place at Stockholm University this autumn, an increase of 12% on 2011 and a new record. The programmes most applied to are, like previous years, in law and psychology. Read more »
 
 
 
Stockholm Summer School
 
Following the success of its inaugural summer, preparations are underway for Stockholm Summer School in 2013. The School is a collaborative effort between Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institutet and expects to offer five courses in June 2013. A diverse range of courses is being prepared spanning astroparticle physics to The Swedish Model. Read more »
 
 
 
Greater collaboration with Rutgers University
 
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, has signed an agreement for cooperation and student exchange with the University. The agreement is initially valid for three years and allows for two undergraduate students to take full-year exchanges. Read more »

Nanotechnology breakthrough
 
Professor Osamu Terasaki and PhD student Changhong Xiao at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry have made a significant breakthrough in nanotechnology. News of the breakthrough was published in the international scientific journal Nature. Read more »
 
 
 
Torsten Persson elected to British Academy Fellowship
 
In its Annual General Meeting the British Academy elected Torsten Persson to its Fellowship as a Corresponding Fellow. The prime criterion for election to the Fellowship of the Academy is academic distinction as reflected in scholarly research activity and publication. Only one or two scholars a year are elected in most fields.  Read more »
 
 
 
FP7 calls for proposals 2012-2013
 
Over the summer the European Commission published the final calls for proposals within the 7th EU-Framework Programme for Research and Development, FP7. This involves 8.1 billion euros (around 70 billion SEK) of research aid. Read more »

University websites set to go mobile
 
The University's websites are set to receive a much needed mobile adaptation, just in time for the autumn application period. The upgrade, set to take place at the end of September, will improve viewability and content accecss on tablets and mobile devices. Read more »
 
 
Urban farming
 
On the lawn outside the University's metro station a forest garden has emerged. The garden is the result of the practical part of a summer course in urban farming and will produce a habitat for wildlife and edible berries and fruit in 2013. Read more »
 
 
 
Adding value to a successful career

The Stockholm Prize in Criminology 2013
 
This year Stockholm University took responsibility for the administration of the Stockholm Criminology Prize. The Prize amounts to one million kronor and this year the Prize was awarded to British Professor David Farrington for his pioneering research on early-life crime interventions. Read more »
 
 
 
Chinese officials study Swedish public administration
 
For the sixth consecutive year, Stockholm University has organised a successful training programme in public administration for civil servants from Guangdong Province, China. This year the training placed a special emphasis on Sweden's public administration at a neighbourhood level. Read more »
